MELROSE ✈ AVIATOR

Aviator is a new flight-themed cocktail bar now open on Melrose Avenue, bringing vintage airline charm to West Hollywood with real airplane seats, tray tables, and overhead bins. The intimate lounge channels retro jet-set vibes with a menu of elevated bar bites like caviar baked potatoes, sliders, and steak bites, alongside classic aviation-inspired cocktails including the Paper Plane and Jetstream Gimlet. Designed to feel like a first-class cabin without ever taking off, Aviator offers a playful, immersive experience grounded in style.

WESTWOOD VILLAGE 🍨 VAN LEEUWEN

Van Leeuwen is officially coming to Westwood Village, with new signage now up on Kinross Avenue marking the arrival of the beloved ice cream brand in one of the neighborhood’s historic buildings. Known for its custard-style dairy and vegan ice creams, sundaes, shakes, and chocolate chip cookie sandwiches, the shop will feature a refreshed design that honors the building’s 1930s architecture while adding a bold orange and pistachio palette.

BEVERLY GROVE 🇲🇽 DOS AMANTES

Dos Amantes Mexican restaurant has quietly opened in Beverly Grove on West 3rd Street, bringing wood grilled branzino, Baja fish tacos, ceviches, and house made salsas to a stretch already known for walkable favorites. Early visitors say the flavors are bright, the shrimp tacos perfectly crisp, and the ceviche rivals coastal spots in Mexico. Though the liquor license is still pending, guests have been welcomed with complimentary tastings and warm service, signaling that Dos Amantes may quickly become a new local favorite.

FORECAST 🌡 HOTTER THAN NORMAL

Los Angeles will see warmer-than-normal temperatures through early next week, especially inland, with valley highs reaching up to 104 and desert areas hitting 106. A slight cooling trend is expected by Friday into the weekend, though temperatures will still remain above seasonal averages. Morning low clouds and fog will linger near the coast, while smoke from the Gifford Fire may affect air quality and visibility at times.

METRO 🚇 NIPSEY HUSSLE CARDS

To mark what would have been his 40th birthday, LA Metro is releasing two limited edition TAP cards honoring Nipsey Hussle as part of its Metro x Culture series. Designed by Jonathan Mannion and Anthony Pham, the Crenshaw & Slauson and Watts cards celebrate the late rapper and activist’s deep roots in South Los Angeles. Only 12,000 cards will be released starting August 15th at select Metro stations and service centers, alongside a temporary renaming of Hyde Park Station to Nipsey Hussle Station through the end of the month.

HOLLYWOOD 🏡 47-UNIT APT BUILDING

Generation Real Estate Partners has proposed a five story, 47 unit apartment building on N Martel Avenue and W Fountain Avenue on the Hollywood West Hollywood border. The project would replace three homes with a mix of studio to three bedroom units, including six reserved for very low income households under LA’s new housing incentives. Designed by Kevin Tsai Architecture, the development includes a rooftop amenity deck and parking for sixteen vehicles.

SILVER LAKE 🏡 74-APARTMENTS

Mysa will deliver 74 apartments on West Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake by late 2025. The five-story project features studios and one and two-bedroom units around a landscaped courtyard, with a community room and rooftop deck. Developed by Ryda Development and Local Development with Lahmon Architects, it uses the Transit Oriented Communities program to include six affordable units. Rents range from $800 for income-restricted studios to $7,000 for market-rate two-bedrooms, replacing the area’s last free-standing commercial parking lot with housing and green space.

BURBANK 🏰 DISNEY’S Q3 BUMP

Walt Disney Co. posted $23.65bn in revenue for its fiscal third quarter, up 2% year-over-year, with earnings per share rising to $1.61 from $1.39. Streaming led the way, as Disney+ gained 1.8m subscribers to hit 128m, and combined Disney+ and Hulu subs reached 183m. The company announced several strategic moves, including ESPN's acquisition of NFL Network, an August 21st launch for its new ESPN streaming service, and plans to fully integrate Hulu into Disney+ next year, signaling a continued shift toward digital growth.

SANTA MONICA 👻 SNAP’S REALITY CHECK

Santa Monica-based Snap Inc. posted mixed Q2 results with revenue up 9% to $1.35bn and users growing to 932m, but net losses widened to $263m as the company burns cash perfecting its AR glasses bet for 2026. While Sponsored Snaps are showing promise with 22% conversion lifts, North American user growth has stalled making investors wonder if this LA tech darling can turn its camera-first vision into sustainable profits.

TRAILER DROP 🎬 JAY KELLY

George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, and Billy Crudup star in Jay Kelly, the new comedy from Noah Baumbach, director of Marriage Story. The film follows famous actor Jay Kelly (Clooney) and his devoted manager Ron (Sandler) on a journey through Europe that makes them confront their lives and legacies. Co-written by Baumbach and Emily Mortimer, Jay Kelly features a star-studded cast including Greta Gerwig and Patrick Wilson. Described as a heartfelt comedy with a Jerry Maguire vibe, it hits select theaters November 14th before streaming on Netflix December 5th.

ACQUISITION 🏈 ESPN X NFL

ESPN has acquired the NFL Network and key NFL media assets in exchange for a 10% equity stake granted to the NFL. The agreement brings seven regular season games, NFL RedZone distribution rights, and official NFL Fantasy integration into ESPN’s fold, positioning the network to bolster its upcoming stand alone streaming service. The move marks a major expansion in Disney’s sports portfolio and deepens its ties with America’s most powerful sports league.

SHOHEI OHTANI 🧢 1,000TH CAREER HIT

Shohei Ohtani hit his 1,000th career MLB hit with a go-ahead two-run homer and struck out a season-high eight, but the Dodgers fell 5-3 to the Cardinals after a late-inning rally. Following Thursday’s off day, the Dodgers host the surging Blue Jays this weekend, who arrive in Los Angeles fresh off a 45-run, 63-hit sweep in Colorado. Clayton Kershaw is set to face Max Scherzer in Friday’s opener.

MIKE TROUT ⚾ 20TH HOMER

Mike Trout crushed his 20th homer of the season and 200th at Angel Stadium, but the Angels came up short in a 5–4 loss to Tampa Bay after loading the bases with no outs in the eighth and failing to score. Junior Caminero powered the Rays with two home runs and three RBI, while Christopher Morel snapped a slump with a go-ahead solo shot in the seventh. Kyle Hendricks gets the start Friday as the Angels open a weekend series in Detroit.
